Hint: they don’t involve demos, pitches, or getting lost down Google rabbit holes:

  1. Write down your company’s mission & objectives
  2. Write down your legal team’s objectives
  3. List the biggest hurdles and threats to achieving those objectives
  4. Map out the lifecycle of any legal matter in your function (intake, triage, drafting, execution, storage, retrieval, and analysis)
  5. Identify the biggest pain points along that lifecycle – where do you waste the most time?
  6. List out every tech platform you use to complete a legal matter
  7. For each platform ask: Am I making the most of this tech? Are there features we don’t use?
  8. Survey your key internal clients to identify their frustrations (e.g. not knowing the status of matters)
  9. Using the above data, craft a set of working problem statements (for example, “our biggest problem is that we spend too much time on X, at the cost of Y, as evidenced by Z…”)
  10. Now, you are now ready to go and MERCILESSLY grill your friendly local tech vendors to find a solution that solves problems and creates value for your team and your clients.
